What kind of 'boss' do you want to be?

#leadership, #boss

When I was in my late 20, I got an interim job at an IT company. They were in the process of implementing new software for the Y2K. But being young and not familiar with 'responsibility' yet, I spent some of my time - actually more than I should - browsing the internet. As to be expected, management caught up to it. Both the CFO and the CTO addressed the issue to me, but in completely different ways.

The CFO made me move desks, so he could keep a closer eye on me, and whenever I asked him for anything, he reminded me of my misstep. Because of it, I was not getting a long term contract with the company, even after a year. I did not get a raise either. And I had to return my company laptop for a outdated desktop. And these are just the things I can remember.

The CTO on the other hand, addressed the issue to me the following way. He said to me "I will ask for the reports on all employees and the use of internet during office hours. I hope you are not in the top 3." And that was all he said. In hindsight, I believe he never asked for the report, but it did affect my behaviour. After a few weeks the matter was forgotten, except for the CTO. He kept reminding me any chance he had. Needless to say I started to resent the CFO, but my respect for the CTO grew.
